2015 NBA Finals Recap

“I been Steph Curry with the shot, Been cookin’ with the sauce, chef, curry with the pot, boy” -Drake

Steph Curry has been my favourite NBA player ever since he was drafted by the Warriors with the 7th overall pick in the 2009 draft. I fell in love with his game after watching him carry Davidson in the NCAA tournament making ridiculous shot after shot. He is my favourite player because he is everything I wish I could be when I play basketball. Some people wish they could play like a Kobe, Lebron, Chris Paul or Kevin Durant, but for me I would want to be Steph Curry as he could be the best shooter in NBA history when his career is done.

That is why I was so happy to see him win his first championship in a great series against the Cavs. The Warriors were the better team and deserved to win no doubt. First year head coach Steve Kerr deserves a lot of credit for the calm presence he brought to the team and making the necessary adjustments. He never micromanaged and pushed all the right buttons whenever the Warriors were in a bit of a funk. This Warriors looks poised to title contenders for years to come as the core is still very young and they seem to always have the right mix of youth and veterans to provide depth.

Speaking of depth, the Cavs simply did not have enough and it definitely was an integral reason to them losing in finals for the second time in franchise history.

The Lebron haters began to trash talk and troll him all over social media immediately after the game. Now I definitely can’t say I’m a huge Lebron fan as I’ve always preferred Kobe over him as the best player of my time (I was not alive for Jordan’s prime and any players before him). However, I still respect him immensely as a basketball player and as a person (from seeing him in the public eye and in the media). He will no doubt go down as one of the best players in NBA history and I find a lot of the hate he gets to be excessive.

It’s a shame that both Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving were both injured as it would have been more interesting to see both teams at full strength. You could argue that the Warriors would still win in that situation, but I think it definitely would have gone to a game 7 and you never know what could happen in a game 7. I was actually quite impressed that Lebron was able to lead the Cavs to 2 wins as they really had no other options on offense. Now this team is no where near as bad as the 2007 Cavs team, but when your second most consistent offensive threat is Timofey Mozgov, I don’t like your chances. It will be interesting to see how the off-season goes for the Cavs as they have to decide if they want to bring back Kevin Love and make decisions on other key players such as J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson. I expect Thompson to be back, but I would not be surprised to see Smith and Love leave. Lebron (the de facto GM) and David Griffin (the Cavs’ actual GM) need to focus on building depth and having a bench that can be called on to produce in the playoffs. Lebron’s loyalty to guys like James Jones and Mike Miller is admirable, but they are not the players they once were and can no longer help him win a championship. If Kevin Love does leave, it will be interesting to see if Lebron can recruit a quality player to come play with him to form another BIG 3 with himself and Kyrie Irving.

The outlook for both teams are bright as the Warriors are loaded for the future while the Cavs have Lebron and play in the much weaker eastern conference. I would not be surprised at all if these teams meet again in next year’s finals which would be a treat for basketball fans everywhere. I just hope that both teams are healthy at the time so that they will be able to produce an even better series for us to watch.
